A Resident Shares Her Path to Medicine Great Tips for New Med Students
This interview is the latest in an Accepted blog series featuringà interviews with medical school applicants and students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at top medical schools and the med school application process. And now, introducingà Samantha Armstrong Accepted: Wed like to get to know you! Where are you from? Where and what did you study as an undergrad? Samantha: I am originally from a small town in Northwest Indiana, LaPorte. It is nestled right on Lake Michigan so I grew up playing on the Dunes. I moved to Indianapolis to attend college at IUPUI. My major was Biology, with minors in chemistry, religious studies, medical humanities and health studies. Having liberal arts minors really helped me be more well rounded on my application and also learn about the cultures and beliefs of future patients. Accepted: Where did you attend medical school? When did you graduate? Samantha: I attended Indiana University School of Medicine and graduated in 2015. Accepted: How did you know your medical school was the right fit for you? Samantha: Studying in Indianapolis for undergrad allowed me the opportunity to volunteer and shadow in the hospitals downtown and shadow physicians who are IUSM faculty. Seeing the dedication and enthusiasm these doctors had towards teaching residents, medical students and me, an undergrad, made me realize this is where I wanted to train and who I wanted to train me. Accepted: Looking back at the application process, did you experience any bumps along the way? How did you overcome them? Samantha: THE MCAT!!! I took the MCAT the summer after junior year, while applying for medical school. I had terrible test anxiety and did not know how to manage it. Needless to say, my nerves got the best of me and my first score reflected that. I remember thinking I will never get in to medical school. I will never be a doctor. I almost postponed my entire application because of this darn test, but thankfully my very supportive mom reminded me that she has NEVER once asked any doctor their MCAT score or even knew what the MCAT was prior to me choosing medicine as a career. She told me that this test is just like any other, no need to study anymore and no need to be afraid of it. she had already registered me for another test date 10 days after I received my score. This was the push I needed to move forward, because there wasnt time to get worried. In those 10 days, I was maid of honor in my best friends wedding, moved back to college, and started resident assistant training. My sec ond MCAT score was much better, and I can confirm not a single patient has ever asked me what my MCAT score was.. because that test does not define you as a physician. Accepted: How was the match process for you? Was internal medicine your first choice? Samantha: The match process was very exciting. I enjoyed applying, traveling for interviews and most importantly, meeting other medical students. It was always so fun to hear about their experiences at different schools and bond throughout the interview process. Internal medicine was my final decision on a residency ââ¬âà but I changed my mind about five times before this during my clinical years. I really loved every field while rotating through them. Accepted: How has residency life treated you thus far? Have you learned anything about yourself through residency? Samantha: Residency life has been the most amazing, and also the most difficult, journey so far. I stand behind the belief that a person makes time for what is important to them, with this in mind I have continued to live a balanced life. Yes the hours are long, yes I sleep in the hospital as much as I sleep at home some rotations, but I always make time to enjoy the people and activities I love. Medicine is a field that will push you intellectually, physically and mentally. Through residency I learned I am stronger than ever imagined. Residency has made me a stronger and more confident individual, but most importantly this strength comes from knowing I am not alone and to ask for help when needed. Accepted: You have a blog and Instagram where you share your life, residency, and health and wellness tips. What inspired you to start sharing your experiences with others? Samantha: I love what I do everyday and want to share it with others. I wish there wouldve been Instagram when I was applying (yes this statement makes me feel old). It is a terrific platform to find mentors, ask questions and most importantly realize that while medical school/residency/application processes are strenuous there is always time and a need to live a healthy fun balanced life. I enjoy connecting with people everyday at various stages of this great journey and can only hope to inspire/mentor others in the future. My blog was started for a more specific reason. Through medical school I struggled my first year to eat healthy and stay active. This lead me into the world of meal prepping and creating quick, easy and cheap recipes. My clinics in residency are filled with patients with the same issues most medical students, like myself, have. they dont know how to cook, are short on time and money. My blog is a way to share simple recipes along with information about how diet affect chronic diseases. A recipe for health, if you will. Accepted: Lastly, can you share your top three tips for those who are just starting their medical school journey? Samantha: 1. Make time for the things you love, and do NOT stop them no matter how busy you are. It is far too easy to cut out reading for leisure, going to a concert, or working out. so resist the urge. Whatever you do to de-stress and have you time is as much a priority as taking that 15 millionth practice test. No-one can work every minute of every day, not even Beyonce.. so take a step back, laugh and enjoy life 2. Trust your gut.à Dont overthink an answer on any exam. Write your personal statement from the heart. If you always thought you were going to be a surgeon but fell in love with pediatrics, go with it. Medicine is a wild ride, and the only constant is change. Embrace this and dont be scared to trust a feeling and run with it. 3. Focus on relationships.à Make friends with medical school classmates. The bond I share with my classmates is one deeper than words. We survived the best and worst of times together. I have so many silly stories from late nights studying, and even more wild stories from late nights celebrating being done with exams. and lets not forget match day parties. These people will not only be your support through medical school, they will be your colleagues in the field and most importantly family. This same advice holds true for residency. Also, focus on the relationships you have with your patients. Being able to care for someone during such a vulnerable time as being sick is truly unique to medicine, and its important never to take this for granted. Ask your patients personal questions about their lives, listen to their stories, and learn about life through their eyes. This is a gift I cherish every day. Lastly, focus on your relationship with family and friends. Trust me, you will need them and all of their support through this process. Do not hesitate for a second to reach out to someone if you feel anxious/sad/depressed. There will be bad days, but you are not alone EVER. Racism In The 1960s - 1886 Words
ââ¬Å"Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell. I had to learn how to fight for myselfâ⬠(Kesha). The intense and troublesome flashback of the 1960ââ¬â¢s gives us an illustration of John Lewisââ¬â¢s books the March: Book 1 and March: Book 2. People of color raised an awareness to Americans about the issues of segregation, discrimination, and civil rights. Matter of fact, they ââ¬Å"wanted to change Americaââ¬âto make it something different, something betterâ⬠(Lewis and Aydin 1:103). In other words, they dream of total freedom and a new America where everyone treats others equally regardless of color. Even though, the Jim Crow laws were positively changing society, today it appears there are similar characteristics of segregation in our daily life. For example, schools. (Powell 1:95) (Powell 2:125) Along the same lines, today nothing changed much because we still have segregation everywhere; it is not as obvious anymore. We have segregated communities and schools. For instance, in Terry Grossà ´s article, ââ¬Å"How the Systemic Segregation of Schools Is Maintained By Individual Choices â⬠, introduces us to journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones perspective of parentsââ¬â¢ decisions to pick an outstanding school for their childââ¬â¢s education. Successful organizations are dynamic, adaptable, and efficient. Prosperous companies continually transform and grow to meet the needs of their environment (Jones, 2013). This paper examines the importance of striking a balance between organizational structure, design, culture, and strategy in order to achieve stability in a continually shifting organizational environment. Introduction The brevity of technological changes in communications and product development have produced rapidly changing, turbulent, global markets. Turbulent global markets challenge organizations to maintain their competitive advantage and create value for the stakeholder. Relatively quick changes in consumer preferences and demands occur since global markets are easily accessed through the internet which provides customers with a plethora of product choices. Sophisticated buyers expect the best technology for the lowest price. Literary Analysis of Northanger Abbey free essay sample
Darian Campbell Mrs. Anderson AP Language and Composition Block 3 October 6, 2012 Literary Analysis of Northanger Abbey Jane Austenââ¬â¢s novel, Northanger Abbey, uses vivid diction and a distinct tone to portray each character in the novel. Austen begins the novel with a nonchalant tone and ends it with a more serious tone. She uses these tones of the novel, along with descriptive word choices to develop mental images of each character in the mind of her audience. In the opening paragraph of Northanger Abbey, Austenââ¬â¢s colorful diction is presented when Catherineââ¬â¢s physical appearance is illustrated as ââ¬Å"a thin awkward figure, a sallow skin without color, dark lank hair, and strong featuresâ⬠(1). Austen also uses diction to portray Catherineââ¬â¢s growth into a young woman. She states that the new, more mature Catherineââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"manners just removed from the awkwardness and shyness of a girl; her person pleasing, and, when in good looks, prettyââ¬âand her mind about as ignorant and uninformed as the female mind at seventeen usually isâ⬠(5). We will write a custom essay sample on Literary Analysis of Northanger Abbey or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page This shows the reader that although Catherine looks older and acts older in some aspects, she is still young and naive. Another character that Austen uses strong diction to depict their personality as well as physical appearance is Henry Tilney. Henry Tilney is the first person that Catherine meets while in Bath. ââ¬Å"The master of the ceremoniesâ⬠introduces Catherine and Henry to be partners in dancing. In the opening paragraphs of Chapter Two, Henry is described as a man who was ââ¬Å"had a pleasing countenance, a very intelligent and lively eye, and, if not quite handsome, was very near itâ⬠(11). This shows the audience Catherineââ¬â¢s first thoughts of Henry Tilney. Besides Henry, Catherine meets another person, Isabella, who quickly becomes one of her best friends. Isabella is beautiful, well educated, a guy-magnet, and is everything that Catherine ever wanted to be. The very first time Catherine and Isabella meet, they become best friends and remain friends throughout most of the novel. Catherineââ¬â¢s fondness of Isabella is revealed when Catherine ââ¬Å"ran directly upstairs, and watched [Isabellaââ¬â¢s] progress down the street from the drawing-room window; admired the graceful spirit of her walk [and] the fashionable air of her figure and dressâ⬠(19). Throughout the novel, Catherineââ¬â¢s attachment to Isabella grows weaker because she begins to see Isabellaââ¬â¢s true personality. Jane Austenââ¬â¢s novel, Northanger Abbey, is filled with vivid diction and multiple tones which are all used to display the physical and mental growth of the main characters. From Catherine to Isabella and Henry as well as other characters in the novel, Austen exhibits every aspect of each of their physical characteristics and personality traits using powerful diction in every description. Deontological Teleological Theories
Deontological Teleological Theories Free Online Research Papers There are three types of ethical systems. The normative ethical system can be broken down into three categories: Deontological ethics, Teleological ethics, and Virtue ethics. In this paper I will be discussing the differences between Deontological and Teleological ethics as well as the problems with both. I will also discuss where my beliefs stand and compare them to others. Deontology derives from the Greek work ââ¬Å"deon-â⬠, which means ââ¬Å"dutyâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"-ologyâ⬠which means the study of. It is the approach to ethics that is mainly about the rightness or wrongness of a particular action as opposed to consequences of the action itself. It is also described as ââ¬Å"dutyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"describedâ⬠ethics. Also described as ââ¬Å"moral absolutistsâ⬠, Deontologists believe that ethics ââ¬Å"bind you to your duty.â⬠Morality is an absolute no matter the penalty or consequence. Basically, if you are ethical it is because you are doing what you have to according to duty. You are bound to the rules as a duty to society. The famous Immanuel Kant believed that it is always wrong to lie, no matter what the consequence(s) are. Even if someone is facing the possibility of death, and you have the opportunity to save them with a lie, that would be unethical in itââ¬â¢s stance. There are some ethical theories that deal with deontological studies. There is: divine command, duty theories, rights theories, contractarianism, and monistic deontology. Divine command is one of the most common beliefs of deontological theories. It is the theory that their moral obligations are to God, and no one else. An action is morally accurate when it is in agreement with the rules and duties established by God. Duty theories are morally correct if it is an accord with some list of duties or obligations. Someone would make a list of duties or obligations that they deem moral. They would then abide by those rules at any cost. No matter that the consequence, they abode by those rules (most of the time they were rules they found directly from the Bible). Rights theories deem an action morally right if it respects the rights of all persons or members of society. Rights theories was a political philosophy that believes people should be free to do whatever they wish as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. This theory is also called Libertarianism. Contractarianism is considered an action that is morally right if it is in accordance with the rules that rational moral agents would agree to observe upon entering into a social relationship (contract) for mutual benefit. This is also sometimes referred to as Contractualism. Most would not agree upon this theory because it does not have much to do with ethical laws. Monistic deontology has to do with an action that is morally right if it agrees with some at least one deontological principle that guides all other subsidiary principles. So, as long as there is one guide ââ¬â letââ¬â¢s say that guide is the Bible ââ¬â you abide with than you are morally right and it would be acceptable. Now there are some problems with the deontological theory. Most of the time there tends to be a conflict of rules. There would be a rule not to lie as well as a rule not to harm any person physically. Those two rules seem pretty easy to abide by right? Well, what if you have to lie in order to not hurt a person? There are some situations that would constitute a confliction of convictions. That is when most would just choose the ââ¬Å"lesser of two evils,â⬠but that would make a person rely on which of the two has the least evil consequence. Therefore, the choice would have been made as a consequentialist or teleological basis rather than a deontological basis. That is where the two collide. Another problem with the deontological moral system is that it does not allow for any grey areas. It is based on absolutes where the morality of an action is never questioned. In most cases we do have conflicting duties and issues that makes decisions difficult to decipher if you are a deontological believer. As well, rules and duties change as time goes by making it difficult to follow all the same rules all the time especially when the consequences change as frequently. Teleology is the study of design and purpose. The root word ââ¬Å"telosâ⬠means end or purpose. A teleological based thought is directed toward the end result. Teleology is a more humanistic point of view. It is to do whatever is in the best interest of the being. Teleology deals with foreseeing the consequences rather than just abiding robotically by rules. Thus, when we are making choices that result in the correct consequences, then we are acting morally. When we make choices that result in the incorrect consequences, then we are acting immorally. In order to make moral choices we have to have some understanding of what the result from our choices will be. It is said that there are two types of a final cause: extrinsic and intrinsic finality. Extrinsic finality consists of a person realizing that their purpose is the utility and welfare of other beings. For example, grass is made to grow in order to sustain the life of animals and animals are designed to sustain the life of humans. The intrinsic finality consists of a person realizing that its purpose is directed toward the perfection of its own nature. So, life is given to us and we are intended to behave in certain ways so as to preserve ourselves from death, disease, and pain. Aside from deontological and teleological ethics, there is virtue ethics. Virtue ethics is a virtue-based theory that places less emphasis on what rules people should follow. It instead focuses on helping people develop good character traits. It is believed with virtue ethics that these character traits will, in turn, allow a person to make the correct decisions later on in life. Virtue theorists also emphasize the need for people to learn how to break bad habits of character. These ââ¬Å"bad traitsâ⬠are called ââ¬Å"vicesâ⬠and they stand in the way of becoming a good person. I think I would have to more agree with virtue ethics. Since you cannot always follow the rules and still remain constantly moral than why try so hard? Rules do change all the time and you cannot follow every rule all the time. I donââ¬â¢t think someone is unethical simply because they do not keep every rule ever. When it comes to ones duties, I do believe you should adhere to your personal duties and keep your word. So my ethical view wouldnââ¬â¢t be too deontological. I also donââ¬â¢t think I have a teleological view on ethics either. I donââ¬â¢t think you should base your personal code of ethics on what the consequences are going to be. Sometimes the consequences of telling the truth are bad, but you should do it anyway. The end result is not always the most important thing to think about when you are making a moral decision because you do not know the future, and cannot rightfully predict what would happen. So, virtue ethics is where I stand so far. I think as long as you have good character than you will be able to make right choices in life. Ethics has to do with who you are. Descriptive paper on metal of honor Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Descriptive paper on metal of honor - Essay Example Smith renowned himself in 1864 after saving his regimental colors; this is after the killing of the color bearer during the Battle of Honey Hill in South Carolina. On the same day in the afternoon, the 55th regiment was pursuing the enemy and in the process they found themselves in a swampy region where the Confederate Army was waiting. The thick underbrush and the surrounding woods obstructed artillery support and infantry movement. The 34th and 55th regiments created columns to progress towards the enemy in a side movement. The other units were repelled by the Confederates but the 34th and 55th regiments persistently moved into the tanking positions. They were forced by the enemy into a narrow gorge and this is where the 55thââ¬â¢s Color-Sergeant was murdered by an exploding shell. The Regimental Colors held by the slain soldier were taken Corporal Smith and he carried them through intense canister and grape fire (Richardson 3). Despite the fact that almost half of the unit was wounded and killed by the enemy, Corporal Smith continued to expose himself to the enemy by carrying the Regimental Colors throughout the fight. Through Corporal Smith, the 55th Infantry Regiment Regimental Colors were not taken by the enemy (Richardson 4). Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt His rank was lieutenant colonel in the United States Army and his organization, the First Cavalry Regiment. His citation for the award was ââ¬Å"for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of dutyâ⬠(Gomez-Granger CRS-3). Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt renowned himself by his acts of gallantry in 1898 in the Republic of Cuba while directing a courageous charge up in San Juan Hill. Risking his personal safety and escorted only by five men, he lead a heroic and desperate charge up in San Juan Hill. He encouraged his troops to go on with the assault through contemptuous enemy fire over the open landscape. In the face of the opponentââ¬â¢s he avy fire, he showed astonishing bravery throughout the charge. He was the first among his troops to reach the rivalââ¬â¢s trenches. In the trench he murdered one of the enemies using his pistol and this gave room to his men to go on with the assault. His courage and leadership brought unexpected results in the Battle for San Juan Hill (Gomez-Granger CRS-3). The Differences The two officers displayed extraordinary courage in the fight against the enemy. However, there are differences in the way these soldiers showed their gallantry. In Corporal Smithââ¬â¢s case, he took a position that was not assigned to him. Corporal Smith was not the carrier of the Regimental Colors but after the killing of the bearer of the Regimental Colors, he took it and carried it throughout the battle. Thus, the corporal saved the Regimental Colors from being taken by the enemy. He did this despite the fact that most of the men were either wounded or killed. On the other hand, Lieutenant Colonel Roosev elt showed extraordinary courage by leading only four or five men in a charge up in San Juan Hill. Though there was intense exchange of fire in the battlefield, he courageously encouraged his men to advance towards the enemy. He was able to open
