Deontological Teleological Theories
Deontological Teleological Theories Free Online Research Papers There are three types of ethical systems. The normative ethical system can be broken down into three categories: Deontological ethics, Teleological ethics, and Virtue ethics. In this paper I will be discussing the differences between Deontological and Teleological ethics as well as the problems with both. I will also discuss where my beliefs stand and compare them to others. Deontology derives from the Greek work ââ¬Å"deon-â⬠, which means ââ¬Å"dutyâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"-ologyâ⬠which means the study of. It is the approach to ethics that is mainly about the rightness or wrongness of a particular action as opposed to consequences of the action itself. It is also described as ââ¬Å"dutyâ⬠or ââ¬Å"describedâ⬠ethics. Also described as ââ¬Å"moral absolutistsâ⬠, Deontologists believe that ethics ââ¬Å"bind you to your duty.â⬠Morality is an absolute no matter the penalty or consequence. Basically, if you are ethical it is because you are doing what you have to according to duty. You are bound to the rules as a duty to society. The famous Immanuel Kant believed that it is always wrong to lie, no matter what the consequence(s) are. Even if someone is facing the possibility of death, and you have the opportunity to save them with a lie, that would be unethical in itââ¬â¢s stance. There are some ethical theories that deal with deontological studies. There is: divine command, duty theories, rights theories, contractarianism, and monistic deontology. Divine command is one of the most common beliefs of deontological theories. It is the theory that their moral obligations are to God, and no one else. An action is morally accurate when it is in agreement with the rules and duties established by God. Duty theories are morally correct if it is an accord with some list of duties or obligations. Someone would make a list of duties or obligations that they deem moral. They would then abide by those rules at any cost. No matter that the consequence, they abode by those rules (most of the time they were rules they found directly from the Bible). Rights theories deem an action morally right if it respects the rights of all persons or members of society. Rights theories was a political philosophy that believes people should be free to do whatever they wish as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others. This theory is also called Libertarianism. Contractarianism is considered an action that is morally right if it is in accordance with the rules that rational moral agents would agree to observe upon entering into a social relationship (contract) for mutual benefit. This is also sometimes referred to as Contractualism. Most would not agree upon this theory because it does not have much to do with ethical laws. Monistic deontology has to do with an action that is morally right if it agrees with some at least one deontological principle that guides all other subsidiary principles. So, as long as there is one guide ââ¬â letââ¬â¢s say that guide is the Bible ââ¬â you abide with than you are morally right and it would be acceptable. Now there are some problems with the deontological theory. Most of the time there tends to be a conflict of rules. There would be a rule not to lie as well as a rule not to harm any person physically. Those two rules seem pretty easy to abide by right? Well, what if you have to lie in order to not hurt a person? There are some situations that would constitute a confliction of convictions. That is when most would just choose the ââ¬Å"lesser of two evils,â⬠but that would make a person rely on which of the two has the least evil consequence. Therefore, the choice would have been made as a consequentialist or teleological basis rather than a deontological basis. That is where the two collide. Another problem with the deontological moral system is that it does not allow for any grey areas. It is based on absolutes where the morality of an action is never questioned. In most cases we do have conflicting duties and issues that makes decisions difficult to decipher if you are a deontological believer. As well, rules and duties change as time goes by making it difficult to follow all the same rules all the time especially when the consequences change as frequently. Teleology is the study of design and purpose. The root word ââ¬Å"telosâ⬠means end or purpose. A teleological based thought is directed toward the end result. Teleology is a more humanistic point of view. It is to do whatever is in the best interest of the being. Teleology deals with foreseeing the consequences rather than just abiding robotically by rules. Thus, when we are making choices that result in the correct consequences, then we are acting morally. When we make choices that result in the incorrect consequences, then we are acting immorally. In order to make moral choices we have to have some understanding of what the result from our choices will be. It is said that there are two types of a final cause: extrinsic and intrinsic finality. Extrinsic finality consists of a person realizing that their purpose is the utility and welfare of other beings. For example, grass is made to grow in order to sustain the life of animals and animals are designed to sustain the life of humans. The intrinsic finality consists of a person realizing that its purpose is directed toward the perfection of its own nature. So, life is given to us and we are intended to behave in certain ways so as to preserve ourselves from death, disease, and pain. Aside from deontological and teleological ethics, there is virtue ethics. Virtue ethics is a virtue-based theory that places less emphasis on what rules people should follow. It instead focuses on helping people develop good character traits. It is believed with virtue ethics that these character traits will, in turn, allow a person to make the correct decisions later on in life. Virtue theorists also emphasize the need for people to learn how to break bad habits of character. These ââ¬Å"bad traitsâ⬠are called ââ¬Å"vicesâ⬠and they stand in the way of becoming a good person. I think I would have to more agree with virtue ethics. Since you cannot always follow the rules and still remain constantly moral than why try so hard? Rules do change all the time and you cannot follow every rule all the time. I donââ¬â¢t think someone is unethical simply because they do not keep every rule ever. When it comes to ones duties, I do believe you should adhere to your personal duties and keep your word. So my ethical view wouldnââ¬â¢t be too deontological. I also donââ¬â¢t think I have a teleological view on ethics either. I donââ¬â¢t think you should base your personal code of ethics on what the consequences are going to be. Sometimes the consequences of telling the truth are bad, but you should do it anyway. The end result is not always the most important thing to think about when you are making a moral decision because you do not know the future, and cannot rightfully predict what would happen. So, virtue ethics is where I stand so far. I think as long as you have good character than you will be able to make right choices in life. Ethics has to do with who you are. Descriptive paper on metal of honor Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Descriptive paper on metal of honor - Essay Example Smith renowned himself in 1864 after saving his regimental colors; this is after the killing of the color bearer during the Battle of Honey Hill in South Carolina. On the same day in the afternoon, the 55th regiment was pursuing the enemy and in the process they found themselves in a swampy region where the Confederate Army was waiting. The thick underbrush and the surrounding woods obstructed artillery support and infantry movement. The 34th and 55th regiments created columns to progress towards the enemy in a side movement. The other units were repelled by the Confederates but the 34th and 55th regiments persistently moved into the tanking positions. They were forced by the enemy into a narrow gorge and this is where the 55thââ¬â¢s Color-Sergeant was murdered by an exploding shell. The Regimental Colors held by the slain soldier were taken Corporal Smith and he carried them through intense canister and grape fire (Richardson 3). Despite the fact that almost half of the unit was wounded and killed by the enemy, Corporal Smith continued to expose himself to the enemy by carrying the Regimental Colors throughout the fight. Through Corporal Smith, the 55th Infantry Regiment Regimental Colors were not taken by the enemy (Richardson 4). Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt His rank was lieutenant colonel in the United States Army and his organization, the First Cavalry Regiment. His citation for the award was ââ¬Å"for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of dutyâ⬠(Gomez-Granger CRS-3). Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt renowned himself by his acts of gallantry in 1898 in the Republic of Cuba while directing a courageous charge up in San Juan Hill. Risking his personal safety and escorted only by five men, he lead a heroic and desperate charge up in San Juan Hill. He encouraged his troops to go on with the assault through contemptuous enemy fire over the open landscape. In the face of the opponentââ¬â¢s he avy fire, he showed astonishing bravery throughout the charge. He was the first among his troops to reach the rivalââ¬â¢s trenches. In the trench he murdered one of the enemies using his pistol and this gave room to his men to go on with the assault. His courage and leadership brought unexpected results in the Battle for San Juan Hill (Gomez-Granger CRS-3). The Differences The two officers displayed extraordinary courage in the fight against the enemy. However, there are differences in the way these soldiers showed their gallantry. In Corporal Smithââ¬â¢s case, he took a position that was not assigned to him. Corporal Smith was not the carrier of the Regimental Colors but after the killing of the bearer of the Regimental Colors, he took it and carried it throughout the battle. Thus, the corporal saved the Regimental Colors from being taken by the enemy. He did this despite the fact that most of the men were either wounded or killed. On the other hand, Lieutenant Colonel Roosev elt showed extraordinary courage by leading only four or five men in a charge up in San Juan Hill. Though there was intense exchange of fire in the battlefield, he courageously encouraged his men to advance towards the enemy. He was able to open

Spyware and Viruses Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words
Spyware and Viruses - Term Paper Example Moreover, it can be used as a kind of adware, whereby the unsolicited pop-up ads are delivered by the software on top of tracking the behavior of the user. Characteristically, the software is installed when the owner is doing the installation of a kind of free software that they really needed (Parikka, 2007). When the software that is being installed by the user is completed, the spyware will attach itself to the installation and begin the collection of data from the activities of the user or the owner. The user of the computer can also be cheated or tricked into the installation of the software via a Trojan horse when it pretends to be piece of security software offered for free. The creators of spyware have been known for paying the developers of shareware to bundle their software with the authentic software and just repackaging the freeware as well as bundling it with their individual spyware (Parikka, 2007). Another way of spyware installation on an unaware computer user is drive-by downloading. Some of the earliest or first spyware did not do much than reporting to the creators every time the program was put to use. It was aimed at aiding marketing or even monitoring usage for the purposes of licensing. Although that is still happening, we find that a lot of nowadays is intended to steal private and valuable information such as the passwords and usernames for email accounts, bank sites, online games and social networking sites (Parikka, 2007). One might never be aware of the fact that they have malicious spyware on their computer, as it seems to operate in the background in a quiet manner and the explicit quality and functionality of the program might be very attractive. They are usually distributed as either ââ¬Ëfreewareââ¬â¢ or even ââ¬Ësharewareââ¬â¢ with little or no license restrictions for the purposes of trapping as many individuals as possible. On

Violence and Crime Essay Example for Free
Violence and Crime Essay In the last sentence, the immense power of the darkness is revealed when MacCaig points out that no stockades can keep the midnight out. The darkness seems so immensely powerful and lethal because stockades are barriers make to stop anything that comes against it. So if we cant keep the darkness away from NY, nothing can. I think that the message MacCaig is trying to get across to us is that Crime and violence can affect lots of people, even a whole city, and that its impossible stop it or fight it. He cleverly personified the darkness to get this message across to us. Edwin Morgans poem Glasgow 5th March 1971 is also about crime and violence in the society but Edwin Morgan has some different views of it but they also share some same views about it which you can see from the poems. Glasgow 5th March 1971 also sounds like a realistic title, just like MacCaigs title. Is sounds as if there was and incident there in real life. First of all, poet describes the broken glass as a ragged diamond. This creates a contrasted image as broken glass looks completely different to what it looked like when it was in one piece. The word ragged is good word choice because the word itself sounds bumpy and jagged and also like what it means. So its much easier to imagine the shape of the broken glass. Morgan comments on the Mans face as bristling with fragments of glass. The poet doesnt acknowledge us of any bloodiness or pain that the man is in, unlike MacCaig because when MacCaig writes about the injured people, he mentions broken bones and Harsh screaming which clearly indicates the pain the suffering people must be in. There is specific violence when Morgan notifies us that the girl spurts arterial when Morgan notifies us that the girl who is with the man, spurts arterial blood when she is pushed through a shop window. On the other hand, MacCaig only hints at violence and talks about the pain the victims are in like when he is talking about broken bones and screaming. By using the word arterial, he lets us know how deep the cut really is and it also makes the wound seem lethal. Morgan also uses alliteration in his poem in the same way as MacCaig uses it. They both use it when they are talking about the after affects of the crime and violence on people. There is alliteration when the letter w is repeated in wet look white coat. This reflects the soft sound of the blood is splattering on her coat as the w sound is also has that soft sound. The image created is very violent because red blood clearly stands out on a white coat. The red blood will clearly contrast with the white coat, clearly standing out. MacCaig also uses one violent image like this when he talks about the blood glazed sidewalks, which will also stand out. The two victims of the crime, man and girl, both have their arms starfished out and braced for impact. This clearly reveals to us that both people were taken by surprise from looking at the word starfished. Their shear fear is shown by the phrase braced for impact as they dont know what is happening to them presently and what could happen to them next. This is an example of extreme emotion. MacCaig uses extreme emotion as well but he used it to describe the pain the victims were in. Morgan describes either one or two people at a time whereas MacCaig describes what is happing to lots of people as they are affected by violence. Morgan has another phrase with alliteration when the faces of the victims show surprise, shock, as the s and sh sounds are repeated. This mirrors the sound of the broken glass as the two victims move about. At the end, Morgan reveals that the two youths, where the criminals who pushed the couple through the window. He also reveals two more witnesses in the background driving there car, but they purposely drive away and choose not to get involved. I think that the message Morgan is trying to get across is that crime and violence can happen to anyone, anywhere and that it is not being helped by people to stop it as more and more people are becoming apathetic and not getting involved. So they both share similar views. In conclusion, I think the both want their readers to know that crime and violence cant be stopped and that it can happen to anyone, wherever you go. They both write in different ways to get similar points across; Edwin Morgan writes specific violence whereas Norman MacCaig writes violence in general or non specific violence. After looking at both poems, I have learnt that crime and violence is everywhere and that everyone should put in effort, together, if we want it to be completely stopped. Edwin Morgans and Norman MacCaigs poems are based on two completely different cities. They are almost at the opposite side of the world to each other, yet, they still share similar ideas about crime and violence.

Use of Symbols and Symbolism in Knowles Separate Peace :: Separate Peace Essays
Use of Symbolism inà A Separate Peaceà à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à à John Knowles uses the literary element of symbolism in his novel, A Separate Peace. Gene, a student at the Devon Prep School in New Hampshire, tries to understand the love, hate, and jealousy that he feels for his roommate Phineas, nicknamed "Finny." Knowles uses the Assembly Hall, the marble staircase, and the locker room to symbolize how Gene's spitefulness affects Finny, and how this effect leads Gene into adulthood. à à à à à à à à à à à As the effects of Gene's spiteful feelings toward Finny are developed, the Assembly Hall in which Gene's trial takes place is symbolic. Brinker, a classmate, leads some of Gene's peers to bring him to the Assembly Hall. At this time, Gene further realizes that he shook the limb on purpose, which causes Finny to fall out of the tree. Gene's peers are beginning to doubt his innocence. Finny has a burst of anger at the end of Gene's trial in the Assembly Hall. During this outburst, Finny says; "I just don't care. Nevermind" (168). Finny's outburst causes his second injury, which is rooted in Gene's spitefulness towards him. Gene's feelings and their effects are linked together by the Assembly Hall. Finny's anger toward the events of the trial eventually leads to his own death as he storms out into the corridor. As Finny runs down the corridor, the marble staircase that he approaches is symbolic. Finny storms out of the Assembly Hall in which Gene's trial is being held and begins running down the corridor. At this point, Finny fully realizes that Gene intentionally shook the limb, which made Finny fall out of the tree. Finny is in denial, thus causing him to storm out of the room. When Finny reaches the marble staircase, he falls, breaking his leg once again. This injury kills him due to the doctor's mistake while setting the broken bone. Gene's spiteful feelings can be directly connected to the events that took place during and after the Assembly Hall trial. Consequently, the marble staircase symbolizes how Gene's spiteful feelings ultimately cause Finny's death. à à à à à à à à à à à At the end of the school session after Finny's death, Gene's cleaning out his locker is another symbolic act. Gene says, "Brinker went upstairs to continue his packing, and I walked over to the gym to clean out my locker" (193).

Love electra donates thousands of products
San Antonio, TX, April 9, 2008 Love Electra will be donating thousands of its inspiring t-shirt products to the national media advocacy and anti-defamation organization the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for the commemoration of its 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, an extended event that will be celebrated in four cities across the country. The GLAAD Media Awards recognizes and honors media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representation of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and the issues that affect their lives. The gala affair, which kicked off in New York City with a reception and dinner featuring some of Americaââ¬â¢s most talented and renowned entertainers and media personalities, continues through May 10th with events in South Florida, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The GLAAD Media Awards message of inclusion and acceptance is precisely the one that Love Electra propagates daily with its commitment to love and positivity. Love Electra, a company that specializes in the conception, design and manufacture of t-shirts that spread positive messages of love, has recognized the constructive influence that GLAAD has had on the mediaââ¬â¢s treatment of the once marginalized LGBT community. Electra performs this gesture as a means of emphasizing its whole-hearted endorsement of the GLAAD Media Awards. Through the dissemination of products containing memorable pro-love slogans at this event, it recognizes the common goal that exists between the two organizations in their harmonious desire to spread the anti-hate message. ââ¬Å"We appreciate Love Electraââ¬â¢s generous and heartfelt support of the 19th Annual GLAAD Media and our critical ongoing work in media advocacy, fighting defamation and changing hearts and minds,â⬠said Diana Rodriquez, director of special events & sponsorship for GLAAD. The dilemma faced by members of the LGBT, as well as other communities, has always inspired many of the creative products that bear Love Electraââ¬â¢s designs. The messages spread by its founder and designers via their t-shirts are of particular interest to the members of the LGBT community, as one of Electraââ¬â¢s aims is to discourage the unfair treatment of individuals on account of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Rather, love, inspiration, and acceptance are the mission of the company, and with every t-shirt worn by the public the message is spread further. Through its efforts, Love Electra seeks to empower the LGBT community to become what they in fact already areââ¬âthis and future generations of creative, inspiring, and talented role models. The company uses love-inspired quotes to stir the radiation of love from the center of persons who wear the products toward all those with whom they come in contact. The artistry that mixes beautiful colors with powerful designs is therefore also infused with positivity and inspiration. Love Electra uses the psychology of color to imbue its products with energy and appeals to such groups as New Age religious organizations who take pride in their work toward furthering the cause of harmony. The company also appeals to all social, political and environmental groups concerned with the furtherance of justice, equality, and fairness for all who share the planet. Love Electra caters to men, women, and children with t-shirts of all designs and styles. They come decorated with rhinestones and rhinestuds or just plain silkscreen graphics for those who want to keep it simple.
